I am Professor of Visualization in the Department of Computer Science at City, University of London where I co-direct the giCentre. My work involves using techniques from Cartography, Information Visualization, Human Computer Interaction, Computer Science and GIScience to develop novel dynamic maps that help us generate insights from data and communicate trends in phenomena from a diverse range of domains. Short CV.

I am on research sabbatical from November 2021 and will be predominantly away from the office. But you can find me on Teams and in the usual places online. Here's what I am likely to be up to in the next couple of weeks ...

My initial ideas were embodied in the cartographic data visualizer - cdv - which appears in the Milestones in the History of Thematic Cartography, Statistical Graphics and Data Visualization and panoraMap which linked geo-referenced digital photography to maps and exploratory data analysis.

I am member of the Steering Committee of IEEE Information Visualization having been papers co-chair in 2012 & 2013 and conference chair in 2014 where I was also involved in organising a workshop and a bike ride. I represent InfoVis on the IEEE VIS Executive Committee (VEC).

I have given keynotes at the AutoCarto, GISRUK and GIScience conferences and was made a National Teaching Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy in 2005.

Recent papers and videos that describe giCentre research are available online through an open access repository and vimeo channel and the links at the top of the page.

Students at City can call by to discuss any of this stuff, taught modules or project ideas during weekly office hours in term time - alternatively check my online diary and suggest a time when I am in the office [O] to meet.
