LE TOUR DE VIS

The annual Tour de VIS will be a full day ride of around 75-100 km completed at pace of  20 kmh / 12.5 mph. There will be plenty of stops en route and on request, but you need to be able to cycle all day to participate.

Rides will be conducted with a ‘no-drop’ policy, so we ride in a supportive manner as an Autobus at the pace of the slowest rider (la Lanterne Rouge) – no racing.  So we’re anticipating a gentle but full day’s cycling. Depending on numbers and preference we may ride in groups - with established times and locations for rendez-vous. This will be determined on the day of the ride.

Rides should begin somewhere near to the conference and / or places where folks can rent bikes and hopefully be indicative of and sympathetic to local conditions and roadie culture.

Riders will participate at their own risk and should ensure that they are prepared, equipped and insured to participate in these activities and complete them safely.

Even though 'un tour de vis' suggests a tough day out, we'll go gently. But be sure that you can complete the distance at the required speed given the terrain.

BEFORE LE TOUR

There has been a bit of a tradition of bike rides at VIS and related events over the years. We'll add a few pics here to log some of these events.

ATLANTA - IEEE VIS 2013

Atlanta didn't seem to have a roadie scene so Jason headed to Chattahoochee National Forest, found some grits for breakfast, got a lift in a pick-up to the top of a hill and pounded down and around on a Mountain Bike.

SEATTLE - IEEE VisWeek 2012

Jo and Jason found helpful bike shops and a great route from the centre of Seattle round Lake Washington. Breakfast at a brewery.

SANTA BARBARA - UCSB 2013

Ross, Miriah and Jason climbed the Gibraltar Road after a workshop at UCSB. The ascent was spectacular and involved climbing through and above the cloud.

SALT LAKE CITY - IEEE VisWeek 2010

Aidan, Jo, Jason and Yarden climbed up to Snowbowl just before VisWeek. Yarden did a great job getting bikes set up.
